The last beta I played was fun, but from a small guild standpoint, i don't see a lot of competitive gaming coming from this game unless there's a solid group of 6 or more people playing. This isn't the type of game I can see myself putting other activities aside to play, it certainly doesn't have the thrill of exploration or guild-event type of stuff in place. If a game were to come along that would offer the type of guild gameplay like raids etc, and also offer a full MMO experience and some level of immersion, I would be on board with that.

If progress will be wiped, it'll be a good idea to mess around for a bit and check it out, but I really recommend not going hardcore. I find the game a bit grindy, (ALWAYS need to be harvesting something) but the open PvP full loot aspect can be a lot of fun when you're with your friends.

Anyone still playing Albion Online? I go back to it from time to time. The game still has a loyal core player base.
