and if they can jack the price up by making it seem like there is a "shortage" then so be it. I mean the 70's gas "crisis" wasn't, it was the middle east periodically stopping exports to the US, and US oil companies adjusting price and quantities to keep their reserves intact.

The NDP are really just a Canadian version of Nader's party down south, and the Bloc is an anomaly that should never have been permitted.

We could start a KoT party, though. I heard from Lith that a party gets like $1.75 from the government for every vote they get that they can use towards they "campaign budget". I smell a kegger.

I'm there.

The two party system is by far more pluralistic than a coalition parliamentary system. Two party systems do not shut out minorities in an elective district. Parliamentary systems do. Our two party system rewards grass roots organization, pandering to minority (and I don't necessarily mean race) interests, and overall has shown higher voter participation rates than parliamentary coalition systems.

I know it's against what you read in your manifestos and hear on CNN, but there is empirical data proving that our two party system is superior to a parliamentary system when keeping the electorate's best interests at heart. Why? Because in order to succeed in this system, you have to be a lot of things to a lot of people. I am sure you think that our system is not often copied in favor of parliamentary democracies, but it is not for its inadequacies. It is because when new governments are being formed, interested parties are not willing to institute a system in which they will regularly have to compromise to reach governance.

Further, though 3rd parties are attractive for the moment, this only stems from the fact that they are usually single-issue or few-issue parties. Single-issue parties do not ever get the support they need to be a force in government. This is because no matter how great the idea is to someone or group of people, there is never enough people to back a single-issue national candidacy based on an issue that is so unique that it defines that party and is not a theme that will be picked up by national parties.

You may ask why not coalitions instead of two major parties. The reason that this is not as pluralistic is that citizens can be disenfranchised depending on where they live more easily when there are parties that cater to smaller groups of beliefs.

I am not saying parliamentary systems are bad. But America always seem to take shit for its two party system. I just think it's funny that when you take time to study it, it's actually a good system. By the way, our laws do not prevent additional parties. Recent attempts have just been lame. In our history, when a 3rd party has garnered enough support in the electorate, it has exercised power disproportionant to its following. Classic examples in our history of 3rd parties moving our government include abolition of slavery, women's suffrage, and prohibition of alcohol. All these started as third parties. Our system does not ban 3rd parties. It only filters the passions of the people until the cream rises to the top (read: Madison's Federalist #10). Or shit rises to the top depending on which side of the issue you are on. ;)

Though they are all good and i recommend you reading all the federalist papers, #10 embodies the reasons why the two party system emerged and why our system works. You should take a look if you're not familiar with it.

The "shit for a two party system" really only picked up after the "Florida incident." The only references I ever saw before that were that Simpsons halloween special with the aliens running and Perot getting mad and punching through his top hat.
Parliamentary systems get just as much shit as two party. God, read the community papers when they ask the inspired "people" what they thought about the election.. Always the winners blathering about improvements and imminent joy and the sore losers complaining that the (left/right/center) vote was split by having another party there.. Same crying, sniveling tantrum that the Gore people threw about Nader's success in '00.

Everyone will never be happy. Period. From the sounds of it sometimes, you can almost say no one will ever be happy.

I maintain that the best form of democracy will operate by putting into "power" (as the "voice") the mature, responsible person who absolutely, under no circumstances, wants to be leader. Then you are nearly guaranteed to have someone who will do the just thing, and not robotically follow that old quote.. Hrm. Lemme find it.
